Organized Labor Comes To India’s Tech Industry

Posted by ekawaaz on November 21, 2006

The Nightmare Comes True

I thought it was terrible. I was wrong. It is far, far worse!–These words sum up my feelings at that moment. Very sad day for India’s booming IT/ITES industry. Now watch out strikes by Indian techies, which will tarnish the relatively good image that outsourcing enjoys among corporations in other countries.

Unionizing IT/BPO sector will hamper the growth of Industry. This will be a back step and it will reduce the growth rate of most booming industry in India. Foreign clients don’t like unionizing the sector because of the fact that it’s just another way to blackmail them.

India’s technology industry, which has been merrily soaking up jobs from higher-cost countries, got a little shock last week when it had its first brush with organized labor.

The Center for Indian Trade Unions, a Communist group that represents several million employees across India, launched the West Bengal Information Technology Services Association in Kolkota. Since it’s not as much a union as an employee rights group, membership is voluntary.

Trade union leaders have accused technology-services firms of abuses ranging from firing employees without notice to not providing transport for workers leaving late-night jobs.

Hang Bush and Blair, release Saddam: Communists in India demand Saddam be spared gallows

Posted by ekawaaz on November 16, 2006

What about communist regime and its murders leaders who has killed their own citizens. The 55-year history of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is written with blood and lies. Under the rule of the CCP, 60 to 80 million innocent Chinese people have been killed, leaving their broken families behind. Many people wonder why the CCP kills.

Remember:

  • Great Leap Forward, a policy that caused 20-30 million Chinese to die of starvation.
  • Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, when 400-2000 protestors were killed and 7000 to 10000 were injured. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) still has not come to terms with the 1989 Tiananmen massacre, refusing to publish information about the number of persons killed, injured, “disappeared,” or arrested or to admit that the attack on peaceful protestors was a mistake.
  • KOLKATA, India, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of communists marched in the Indian city of Kolkata on Thursday demanding that Saddam Hussein’s death sentence be lifted. India’s left parties, which won a record number of parliamentary seats in the 2004 elections, have a long history of opposing American foreign policy and have held huge protests in recent years against U.S. military action in Afghanistan and Iraq. Protesters shouted “Hang Bush and Blair, release Saddam” as they marched in the heart of Kolkata, capital of the communist-ruled state of West Bengal. Activists also burnt an effigy of U.S. President George W. Bush.

India bans travel by Tibetan activist during visit by Hu Jintao

Posted by ekawaaz on November 16, 2006

When President Bush visited India government didn’t stopped any people for demonstrations, so why our democratically elected government is stopping now, Tibetan Leaders for demonstration? We live democracy every one got right to show and express their feelings, we are not communist state like China. Why the hell our government didn’t stopped CPI M when they took streets when President Bush was in India? Law should be equal for every one. Is that CPI M pressured government to please Chinese President? This is just another sad day for Indian democracy.

NEW DELHI: The Indian police have issued an order curtailing the movement of a prominent Tibetan campaigner, in a bid to prevent protests during a visit next week by President Hu Jintao of China.

The police in Dharamsala in the north, the effective seat of the Tibetan government in exile, issued a written order to Tenzin Tsundue, 31, a poet and champion of Tibetan independence.

During the visit by the Chinese prime minister, Wen Jiabao, to the southern Indian technology hub of Bangalore in April 2005, Tsundue climbed atop a building across the street from where Wen was speaking and unfurled a banner reading “Free Tibet.”

CPI(M) asks govt to severe military ties with Israel

Posted by ekawaaz on November 12, 2006

The CPI (M) on Thursday called upon the Centre to sever military ties with Israel and recognize it as an “outlaw state’” after an Israeli army offensive killed several Palestinians early Wednesday. Hindustan Times Reports:

CPI(M) wants centre to sever military ties with Israel

“The Party general secretary, Prakash Karat, said that the issue of India’s relation with Israel has been raised a number of times in the last two-and-half years.”We have taken a stand on the issue that India shouldn’t have military or security ties with Israel. We have taken that stand for more than two years. The Government hasn’t listened to us,’’ Karat said, adding that it was yet to be decided whether to raise the issue at the UPA-Left coordination committee meeting on November 13.”

This is not the first time CPI (M) has raised this sort of demand. Even in past they has raised same demand and in last two and half years of their proxy rule ( supporting congress I government) they had raised this issue number of times, on grounds of human rights abuses against Palestinians ( Recent demands comes after 18 Palestinian civilians including nine children were killed. Of the dead, 14 were from the same family when Israeli tanks shelled the locality of Beit Hanoun in the Gaza strip, a largely residential area.).

But what makes me wonder about CPI (M) theory of this demand is that they want India to sever military ties with Israel because Israel is committing human rights abuses against Palestinians (this I will discuss in my next post). But I had never heard from them asking government sever the ties with Iran or Syria two biggest supporter of terrorist organization Hezbollah. (Responsible for killings thousands of innocents Israelis)

[From the inception of Hezbollah to the present[4][61][62][63][64] the elimination of the state of Israel has been Hezbollah’s primary goal. Secretary-General Nasrallah’s has stated that “Israel is an illegal usurper entity, which is based on falsehood, massacres, and illusions,”[44] and considers that the elimination of Israel will bring peace in the middle east: “There is no solution to the conflict in this region except with the disappearance of Israel.”[65][66] In an interview with the Washington Post, Nasrallah said “I am against any reconciliation with Israel. I do not even recognize the presence of a state that is called ‘Israel.’ I consider its presence both unjust and unlawful. That is why if Lebanon concludes a peace agreement with Israel and brings that accord to the Parliament our deputies will reject it; Hezbollah refuses any conciliation with Israel in principle.”[67]] Source From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anyway I am not here to discuss about terrorist organization Hezbollah or Israel/Palestine conflict. But to share my opinion on India-Israel relation and why it is much more important for India to have close ties with Israel.

    jointindo-isra.jpg

Why India can’t sever ties with Israel:

India and Israel’s bilateral relationship has blossomed since the two countries opened diplomatic ties in 1992. India accorded official recognition to Israel in 1950 but established formal diplomatic relations in 1992. Israel one of the smallest country on this earth has produced best intelligence service, and their defensive system are one of best in the world. Look out their spy agencies MOSSAD, SHIN BET and AMAN. All the three external, internal and army agencies have got world reputation.

    Common Situation:

The India-Israel relationship is many-sided and multidimensional. While two nations are illustrious by different religions and cultures, yet in many ways India-Israel have much in common. Both countries achieved independence from the British almost simultaneously (India in 1947 and Israel in 1948). Both India and Israel are threatened by similar strands of radical Islamism (Terrorist Oragnisation). While Israel is concerned with Iran’s nuclear potential and support of terrorism (Hezbollah), New Delhi worries about Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal falling into the hands of Islamic radicals.

    Why India needs Israel support:

Once the Soviet Union falls apart, India understands ties with the Soviet Union no longer served as an obstacle to relations with Israel so India started thinking about changing foreign policies. Falling of Soviet Unions or ending of Soviet ERA is not only the reason for our government to rethink about policies but there are also many other reason which forced government of India to makes some drastic changes and start co-operation with Israel.

Secondly during Soviet ERA India enjoyed very close relations with middles east countries but when Soviet Unions breaks down Middle East countries started showing their backs mainly due to growing Arab empathy with Pakistan regarding Kashmir, and was furthermore concerned by a growing China-Pakistan military relationship and the proliferation of weapons programmes between the two countries. One also has to keep in mind that China has very close ties with Pakistan and has helped them in crucial fields like defense and nuclear technology. It is no secret that most of missile power acquired by Pakistan has come from North Korea which again has very close ties with China.

India also understands that it will be increasingly beneficial to learn from Israel’s experience in dealing with terrorism since Israel has also long suffered from cross-border terrorism and internal terrorist organization. States such as Pakistan in South Asia, or Iran and Syria in Middle East, have long used terror as an instrument of their foreign policies. There are, thus, distinct structural similarities in the kind of threat that India and Israel face from terrorism.

What Israel offers to India or can offers:

    • Israel offers India a valuable and sophisticated weapons and military equipment to make our defense forces stronger and hi-tech.

    • Israel offers India both material and moral support in fighting the menace.

    • Israel’s defence industries have earned a global reputation for upgradation of old weapon systems to latest technological capabilities. It applies to India’s vast holdings of Russian combat aircraft and tanks holdings.

    • Israel could help India in dealing terrorism as they had better experience in dealing with it.

    • Israel science and technological advances in the fields of satellites, missiles, rockets and nuclear fields are much better than any other countries. This advanced source of technology can help India to build its own satellite and space mission more solid.

A friend in need is a friend indeed:

During the Kargil War, Israel will be remembered by many Indians in a very positive and friendly manner. When India asked for help for high altitude surveillance and laser guided system, Israel responded magnificently, despite pressures from various quarters, not to supply UAVs for high altitude surveillance, laser - guided systems and many other items which were supplied within 24 hours.

Demanding that India should sever ties with Israel, is a lawful activity in a democratic set up, but it would be better if the CPI (M) and others allies of CPI (M) also keep the national interests in mind while demanding this sort of things, they should think twice before formulating their policies on sensitive issues which can have long term consequences for India’s own interests and its security policies. Always remember that in even in Soviet ERA Soviet Union and even other India close allies have never offered so much to India since its creation.

American Citizen won JNU election in India

Posted by ekawaaz on November 11, 2006

Tyler Walker Williams an opponent of IRAQ War and very strong opponent of Mr.Bush foreign policy, a US citizen and a student of Hindi Language course become the first foreigner to win the student union election in Indian history. Mr.Williams won the election under the banner of unions affiliated to Communist Party of India. In his campaign he has raised the voice and his concern over US foreign policies and was very critical against Mr.Bush policies. So question is does he won the election by sympathy vote because he has raised the question against his own country President and its policies? Or he is really capable of leading the student union in right direction? American and communist it’s hard to digest.

U.S. student is first to win JNU election in India

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A U.S. citizen on Saturday became the first foreigner to win a student election at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University after mounting a campaign critical of U.S. foreign policy.Tyler Walker Williams, a student of Hindi, was elected vice-president of the students’ union of JNU, which has produced many of the country’s top politicians.

Williams, is the first foreign student to win elections at the school and is said to be the first foreigner to win a student election in India.

He represented a union affiliated to a Communist Party, which has held sway over the university’s student body for decades.

“When students see an American attached to an (Indian) students’ movement, and when he opposes American colonialism, it raises curiosity,” Tyler told NDTV.

Indian Call centre workers say ‘no’ to unions

Posted by ekawaaz on October 29, 2006

Unionizing IT/BPO sector will hamper the growth of Industry. I hope that it won’t happen in India as this will be a back step and it will reduce the growth rate of most booming industry in India. Foreign clients don’t like unionizing the sector because of the fact that it’s just another way to blackmail them. If India wants to keep this industry alive and keep on growing then please reject any move of Left (CPI) to unionize the IT/BPO sector.

Of course I am really happy to see recent survey conducted by C fore shows that almost 53% employees of this sector don’t want to associate with any union as they also believe that this unionizing of IT/BPO sector will hamper the industry growth and could damage the whole reputation of industry.

Call centres wary of trade unions

It is not an obvious combination. The world of trade unions and that of information-technology (IT) services seem light years away. And that is just how most call-centre employees would like it to stay.

Although the majority of call-centre employees feel exploited — particularly by the long hours they put in at the workplace — they are just as clear that they would rather not call in the trade unions. Not yet, at least.

The findings are part of an opinion poll conducted for the Hindustan Times by C fore. Conducted among 374 IT and ITeS professionals in seven cities across India, the poll found that call-centre employees in Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai believed it was not yet time for unions. The majority went on to add that the formation of trade unions would, in fact, harm the industry in the long run.

The workers felt most aggrieved about long working hours and, perhaps, odd hours — going to work when most of the neighbourhood was preparing to go to bed or was already in bed. Low pay was another grievance and then the lack of facilities, the bane of any low-cost-high-returns operation. That was the response of 42 per cent of the respondents who felt exploited. The majority, 47 per cent, was happy and would not change anything.
