Iraq priest ‘killed over pope speech’

The relatives of a Christian priest who was kidnapped and beheaded in Iraq have said that his Muslim captors had demanded his church condemn the pope’s recent comments about Islam and pay a US$350,000 ransom.

They were speaking as more than 500 people attended a memorial service on Thursday for father Amer Iskender after his decapitated body was found in an industrial area of the northern city of Mosul on Wednesday.

Iskender was a priest at the St. Ephrem Orthodox church in Mosul.

“He was a good man and we all shed tears for him … He was a man of peace,” said Eman Saaur, a 45-year-old schoolteacher who said she attended Iskender’s church regularly.

Pope apology demanded

Iskender’s relatives, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, said the unidentified group that seized Iskender on Sunday had demanded a ransom and that his church condemn a statement made by Pope Benedict XVI last month.

Maldives fast acquiring a radical Islamic colour: Report

Is south Asia is going to be hub for Islamic Extremist? Pakistan, Afghanistan and now Maldives.

Till a few years back, Maldives, a declared Islamic state in 1997, had a very liberal way of life when women wore bright-colour body-fitting dresses and hair bands to keep their hair in place.

But, that way of life is fast changing, with fundamentalist preachers persuading locals to take to radical Islam, asking women to stay indoors and cover their bodies from head to toe.

The radical Islamic preachers spread hatred against Christianity, banning the citizens from listening to any radio stations having a missionary message.

The government also believes that the real threat to stability in the Maldives comes from Christianity and not due to a lack of democracy

Who says its a Man’s World?

Having trouble with homework? Call India

Got problem with maths equation? or Having trouble with English grammar? Call India. If you cant afford private tutor for your kid in USA, then better you enrol your kids with TutorVista.

WASHINGTON – American students having trouble with pesky math equations or intricate English grammar are increasingly turning to tutors all the way in India for help with their homework.

The tutors are part of a growing army of teachers being recruited across the Asian giant to dispense their knowledge online to US kids.

At TutorVista, a Bangalore-based company that launched US services last November, customers pay 100 dollars a month for unlimited hours of e-tutoring on a variety of subjects, ranging from physics to history.

The price represents a fraction of the 40 to 100 dollars an hour parents typically have to pay for face-to-face tutoring sessions or the average 40 dollars charged by US-based online tutors.

“We see TutorVista as a business to make education affordable to the masses,” Krishnan Ganesh, the company’s founder and chairman, told AFP in a telephone interview. “It’s a big anomaly that the United States produces the maximum number of Nobel laureates (…) and yet the education system is in crisis at the school level.”

Vietnam death row prisoner found pregnant, gets life instead

This is nice way and easy way to escape death penalty. I feel sorry for Afzal Guru main culprit of Indian Parliament attack. As he cant get pregnant to escape death penalty. Only hope left for him is to pray that President of India show some mercy on him.

HANOI – A woman sentenced to death in Vietnam for smuggling heroin and supposedly detained in isolation has become pregnant and had her sentence commuted to life imprisonment, her lawyer said on Thursday.

Nguyen Thi Oanh was sentenced to face a firing squad on 28 April this year but on 15 September she was found to be 11 weeks pregnant – suggesting that she conceived the baby in late June.

Her lawyer, Nguyen Hong Bach from the firm Pham Hong Hai and Associates, said that now both Mrs Oanh and her unborn baby will be allowed to live.

“It means that she will avoid the death sentence and will face a life sentence instead,” he said.

Under Article 35 of the Vietnamese Penal Code, the death sentence cannot be applied to pregnant women or women with children under the age of three at the time of crime or the trial.

Blair, Brown, Rushdie back minister in veil row

Thank God!People still understand simple English. Jack Straw finally found much needed support from his colleagues. I don’t have any thing against about wearing “veil” every women have every right to choose what they want to wear and how they want to wear, but personally I believe “veil” present the problem in communication.

LONDON — Britain’s former foreign secretary Jack Straw found support Tuesday from Prime Minister Tony Blair, Finance Minister Gordon Brown, and controversial author Salman Rushdie for raising the issue of whether Muslim women should be veiled.

Blair said that Straw had been “perfectly sensible” in addressing the topic while Rushdie – forced into hiding because of Muslim outrage at his 1988 book The Satanic Verses – used more forthright language.

“He [Straw] was expressing an important opinion, which is that veils suck – which they do,” the British-Indian author, who was raised as a Muslim but is now an avowed atheist, told BBC radio.

Brown, meanwhile, told the BBC in an interview that it would be better for Britain if fewer Muslim women wore veils. Straw – still in the Cabinet as leader of the House of Commons – wrote in his local newspaper last week that he asks Muslim women to remove their veils when they visit his constituency office in Blackburn, northwest England.
