India a flawed democracy: Economist

This report reminds me one famous quote by Thomas Jefferson quotes (American 3rd US President (1801-09)

“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”

This is what really happening in India at present. More criminals are getting elected by using power and guns so this report really didn’t surprise me at all.

India is one of the 54 countries that have flawed democracies, according to a new democracy index devised by the Economist Intelligence Unit, a division of the leading newsmagazine The Economist.

In a detailed analysis of the ‘World in 2007’, the magazine has devised the index that examines 60 indicators across five broad categories: free elections, civil liberties, functioning government, political participation and political culture.

  1. Did you know that OBCs are over-represented in State Legislatures across India (CNN-IBN). Does this mean non-OBCs need reservation now?

    So. you have the so-called oppressed ruling the states, so-called elite harassing everyone, what hell is happening here! A big mess is being created by UPA.

    Equality of Opportunity should be guaranteed – No Equality of Results.

    We want everyone to have a chance at becoming a Airline Pilot. But we do not want pilots who did not make it on merit! Would you?

  2. I totally agree with Apun Ka Desh. It seems the majority needs reservation now. I’m not really surprised with that “report”. Its a known fact.

  3. It makes for sad reading. Democracy is an asset as well as a liability. It is unfortunaate when the latter prevails over the former. Democracy works best when its operators — the people — are well-qualified. Otherwise, as in India, it works only as a good concept.

  4. The report is a from a good and neutral source, in my opinion. Improvements can be made but for some reason it takes too long time.

  5. @Apun

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge i never knew that “Did you know that OBCs are over-represented in State Legislatures across India (CNN-IBN). Does this mean non-OBCs need reservation now” thanks once again

    @Lizze

    @Pradeep

    I agree with you “Democracy is an asset as well as a liability. It is unfortunaate when the latter prevails over the former.”

    @Slim

    Even I am not surprised..

  6. All said and done, India is one of the strongest democracies in the world. Here, governments may get toppled over-night but the next government is always a civilain one. The military never tries to take over the country.

  7. @Ajay

    But do you really thing we have full democracy? Nope..Media is still partly free, all system is affected by corrupt politicians.
