India’s Christians dig deep for graveyard plot

Cemeteries in India are either full or nearing capacity and Christian’s citizens make up less than 2 percent of India’s 1.1 billion people are already casting about for places to bury their dead, Reuters reported. The shortage of burial space is tied to the many factors, government denial to offer more land saying other religious groups would make similar demands, second growth of Christianity in some states of India due to the conversion to some low caste Hindus and third restriction on building a new cemetery due to environmental restrictions. Many people are forced to pay fortune to book a plot for the family members and for themselves too. Like in Bihar one of the most poorer state of India asking people to donate up to 60,000 rupees to reserve plots. So for now, that’s the sorry state of affairs in India.

KOLKATA, India (Reuters) – India’s Christians are running out of space to bury their dead, leading some to pay small fortunes to book their final resting place in a relative’s grave.

Churches are asking people to empty remains from graves of family members who died more than 25 years ago and store them in specially created vaults, a senior official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India told Reuters.

“We foresee a major crisis across India and are asking people to empty graves and shift the remains,” said Donald H.R. De Souza, a former deputy secretary general of the conference.

Indian state to adopt workplace HIV policy

Right move at the Right time! Hope this sort of policy and law will also be introduced by other state governments.

People living with HIV and AIDS, enjoys equal rights that must be honored by society and governments. We can not discriminate any one by their health, colour or caste religion. It’s shame. We as citizen should at least try to understand that people living with, or affected by, HIV enjoy the same respect and rights as others and are entitled to unconditional support and acceptance within their faith communities, and in wider society, at local, national and international levels.

MUMBAI – India’s western state of Maharashtra is set to introduce a policy aimed at curbing discrimination against HIV-infected workers, a leading newspaper said on Sunday.

It would cover areas such as recruitment, transfers and promotions, and would be applied first in all state government offices, the Hindustan Times said, quoting Maharashtra’s health secretary, Vijay Satbir Singh. The state would ask private-sector firms to adopt the policy after a few months, the paper said.

“Authorities who know about the HIV-positive status of an employee would be required to keep it confidential,” Singh was quoted as saying.

Indian kids to get sex, drugs lessons -report

This report reminds me the very good and informative article publishes by Hiren only few days ago regarding sexual education in India. Its is good step but I have doubt about this program success, not being pessimistic but teaching puberty, sexual transmit deceases to the children’s as young 5 years old and kids studying in kindergartens is not going to work. In my opinion they are too young to understand these sorts of things. Start some thing for pupil’s age between 10-14 years old will make sense. Only time will tell if the program hit the success road or not. !!

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Schools in conservative India will teach children as young as five years old about sexual health and drugs from next year to boost awareness of the dangers they face in a changing society, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

India’s national examination board is set to introduce a new programme teaching pupils at kindergartens and schools about drug and sexual abuse, HIV/AIDS, hygiene and nutrition, the Times of India daily reported.“Topics related to sexual changes at puberty, substance abuse, myths concerning the reproductive growth of a child and sexually transmitted diseases will be part of the curriculum,” Usha Ram, a school principal involved in developing the programme said.

Conservative attitudes to sex and contraception and a lack of awareness is common, especially in rural India.

India recruits beggars to curb spread of AIDS

Brilliant Idea, According to UNAIDS India got 5.7 million people living with HIV-AIDS, the highest figure in the world. If India wants to restrict this figure and hoping to reduce the figure in coming years then she must start similar type of programs in other states too to educate the locals about all the sources of catching this deadly virus. Hope some more Indian states will adopt the similar strategy and start spreading the awareness about this deadly disease.

KOLKATA (Reuters) – Thousands of beggars in eastern India have been recruited to help stem the spread of the HIV/AIDS virus by singing songs and acting in plays about safe sex.

Officials in the impoverished state of Bihar say they want to train many of the state’s estimated 100,000 vagrants to sing songs in trains and buses and beside busy roads, as well as enact street plays about the deadly virus.

“Beggars are great actors and very creative,” Vijay Prakash, Bihar’s welfare secretary, told Reuters. “They always had the skills, but lacked direction which we are giving them and the experiments have so been very successful.”

India has the world’s highest HIV/AIDS caseload with 5.7 million infected people, according to the United Nations AIDS agency. But activists say the true figure may be much higher as surveillance is limited in much of the country.

India flawed by focus on sex in campaign against AIDS: study

Recent study said India is making big by mistake assuming that HIV- AIDS mostly spread by sexual intercourse and especially with prostitutes. It is correct that people do get the infected with HIV-AIDS from prostitutes but this is not only source of overwhelmingly spreading of this deadly virus in our beloved country. According to UNAIDS India got 5.7 million people living with HIV-AIDS, the highest figure in the world. If India needs to restrict this figure and wants reduce the figure in coming years then she needs to start programs which educate the people about all the sources of catching this deadly virus.

The health awareness programs which India is running at the moment is not capable of educating the people of all others sources by which they can get caught HIV-AIDS.

If Government of India keep ignoring threats from other sources in health awareness programs running to educate people about HIV-AIDS, in particular the re-use of unsterile instruments in hospitals, cosmetic services, dental surgeries and tattoo parlours, then I wont be surprised if this figure get double in coming years.

PARIS (AFP) – India is making perilous mistakes in its fight against AIDS by assuming the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is being spread overwhelmingly by sex and especially by prostitutes, a study warns.

India is considered by many specialists to be an easy target for AIDS, despite the health authorities’ insistence that they are making headway against the disease.

In May, the Geneva-based agency UNAIDS said India had 5.7 million people living with HIV/AIDS — the highest figure in the world, ahead of South Africa where the figure stands at 5.5 million. The government says the tally is 5.2 million.

The new study, published by Britain’s prestigious Royal Society of Medicine, does not wade into the row over these figures, but instead lashes India’s assumption that sex, especially with prostitutes, is the main driver for new infections.
